PhD Positions Description:

In these PhD positions, you will join postdocs Diana Taschetto and Stefano Furlan on the ERC Advanced Grant for the project. Your job will focus on exploring Niels Bohr's philosophical legacy. The project aims to provide an unbiased understanding of Bohr, emphasizing his influence in the philosophy of physics, biology, and general debates on science and objectivity.

As a PhD candidate, you will concentrate on one of the three main areas of the project: philosophy of physics, philosophy of biology, or general philosophy of science. You will have the opportunity to choose from various subprojects within BOHR21, such as reevaluating Bohr's impact on the philosophy of physics, investigating his influence on theoretical biology, or exploring the applicability of his concept of complementarity in modern philosophy of science discussions.

Additionally, your responsibilities will include:

Spending a few weeks annually in Copenhagen for research at the Niels Bohr Archive.

Assisting in organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences in Utrecht and Copenhagen.

(Co-)authoring papers related to the project topics.

We will utilize historical resources, particularly those in Copenhagen, combining historical and philosophical methodologies. Collaboration with Jan Baedke's research project in Bochum will also be part of the initiative.

Utrecht University, known for its research in the history and philosophy of science, is concurrently hosting other significant projects like Abigail Nieves Delgado’s NWO Vidi grant on microbiome research and race, and Niels Martens’ ERC Starting Grant on philosophy of cosmology.

Hours: 36—40 per week

Salary: €2,770—€3,539 per month

Location: Utrecht, Netherlands

Requirements:

We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague with the following qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant subject (e.g., history or philosophy of physics/biology, general philosophy of science).

Strong interest in collaborative team research and personal development in research and teaching.

Excellent command of English, with working knowledge of Danish and German preferred or willingness to learn.
