Software System Engineer (Fire Control Systems)
Our high-tech systems are used world-wide by selected partners to protect and because we believe every person on this earth has the right to be safe. Our software is the heart of the systems used in critical situations where lives are at stake.
Navy vessels are designed to operate in high-threat environments. These threats are becoming faster, more maneuverable, and more complex. Anti-ship missiles go three to five times faster than the speed of sound, with increasingly complex behavior. At the same the possibilities of modern navy vessels to counter threats are also expanding. When several of these threats come up against them simultaneously, it becomes increasingly difficult for human operators to take efficient and effective protection measures. To aid the crew in effectively combatting these threats at the right time in the right manner, and thus ultimately improve their change of survival, Thales is developing the Above Water Warfare – Fire Control System (AWW-FCS) Product.
The AWW-FCS Product is a next-generation fire control system that is able to integrate different weapon, effectors, and sensor systems, including Thales’s own high-end radar systems like the next-generation dual-band radar suite, integrating a new Active Phased-Array Radar (APAR) with a Sea Master 400 radar. The AWW-FCS continuously assesses which methods are best suited to engage the assigned targets. The AWW-FCS subsequently controls the radar and weapon systems with intelligent algorithms to ensure the target is correctly tracked, targeted, and hit.
About the job
System engineering can be seen as the ‘steering wheel’ in Thales Naval. We determine what engineering and operations need to develop for our customer. System engineers within AWW-FCS do not only focus on the now, but have to define a system architecture that enables future extensions and improvements of the AWW-FCS Product.
As a Software System Engineer you will work in/together with multidisciplinary and self-organizing Agile/Scrum teams. You are a vital link between customers representatives and their requirements, the product roadmap, the product architecture and the development team.
You will be responsible for:
Analyzing functional problems;
Definition of components with allocated functionality in our modular architecture;
Definition of interfaces between components;
Determining/specifying algorithms needed to achieve the correct functionality;
Depending on the aspect acquiring deep understanding of the requirements of a specific domain (Gun Fire Control, Missile Fire Control, complex scheduling strategies) and subsystems that are integrated.
Contributing to Objective/Epic/Story refinements so that:
our software engineers know what the application is supposed to do and what constraints they need to account for in their software design;
Software System Engineers often have the Product Owner role in our Scrum development teams where they take on additional responsibilities in terms of overall planning and management of dependencies between our different Scrum teams.
We know three levels of software system engineers;
The software system engineer, responsible for the design of a specific domain within the AWW-FCS Product. You are part of an Agile/Scrum team and focused on a specific part of the functional architecture of AWW-FCS. Together with other team members you ensure that the right things are build in the right way, at the right time. The software system engineer, responsible for refining functionality which is needed for the AWW-FCS System Architecture. Having the complete picture of different domains and components of fire control and the interface specification between the components. You are part of a system engineering team and are focused on providing the right information in time to the development teams so that they can be as effective as possible and providing the right information to our customers (IRS documents, system design artifacts) so that they can integrate an AWW-FCS Solution. The software system engineer, responsible for the solution view and planning and features of the product roadmap. What functionality needs to be implemented when for which program? Part of the job is providing bid support for customer orders. You are part of a system engineering team and are focusing on an eco-system where AWW-FCS is one of the components.
Thales offers careers, not just jobs. You will have the opportunity to develop towards senior expert in your area of expertise and grow to a Product Owner position for a Scrum team.
